The Federal Government of Nigeria has come under fire for threatening to declare state of emergency in Anambra over the insecurity in the State.
The government’s plan comes a few weeks before the November 6 governorship polls in the state.
Former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri questioned the decision of the federal government to overlook troubled Northern States states like Niger, Zamfara and others but threaten the declaration in Anambra.
The Attorney-General of the Federation had disclosed that the Federal Government may declared a state of emergency in the South East state to ensure the forthcoming governorship election holds.
The minister said the government has resolved that the November 6 election will take place insisting that the government is determined to ensure a high-free exercise.
While fielding questions with newsmen on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting at the presidential villa, Abuja, Malami noted that the security of lives and properties of Nigerians living in Anambra State is paramount to the government.
He added that a state of emergency may be declared in the state if national security is attacked, and the sanctity of the constitutionally guaranteed democracy is threatened.
In his reaction, Omokri said that even Boko Haram-infested states are not considered worthy to be slammed with a state of emergency and questioned the government’s intentions towards Anambra.
Taking to his twitter handle, Omokri stated that, “Abubakar Malami’s threat to declare a state of emergency in Anambra may very well be the spark that ignites what he can’t put out.
“How can you leave Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Zamfara and Niger (where Boko Haram controls 500 communities) and declare an emergency in Anambra?”
