‘Why Nigerians Must Save Tinubu from Becoming President’ – Pete Edochie

Veteran actor, Pete Edochie has given reasons why Nigerians must save Tinubu from becoming the President of Nigeria at this point in his life.

The respected Septuagenerian told BBC Igbo that the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress many not be physically fit to lead a country as complex as Nigeria at his age.

Giving himself as an example, Edochie said that at 75, he may look hale and hearty himself, but he knows how many drugs he takes daily to stay alive.

He said that Bola Tinubu may have had an agreement with the current presidency that he would succeed President Buhari. However, it will be very unfortunate if the country ends up with a president who rules from an overseas hospital.

He recalled that for a very long time, the Igbo and Yoruba tribes have had strong cultural exchanges and strategic alliances.

The actor narrated how close Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe was to Chief Adeniran Ogunsanya, to the extent that when the later died, all Igbo traders in Lagos locked up their shops to mourn the renowned lawyer and politician.

Pete Edochie told BBC Igbo that the friendship between both tribes will not allow Ndigbo deny a Yoruba man another shot at the seat of power.

“Nevertheless, it is the heartfelt desire of every Igbo man to have one of their own as president” as power has changed hands in the last 60 years of Nigeria’s independence, between the Hausas and the Yorubas save for the brief period Aguiyi-Ironsi ruled.

He noted that some people may throw up the narrative that Goodluck Jonathan had a shot at the presidency “but Jonathan was not even an Igbo man.”

He also stated that he has no ill-feelings towards the people of the North because he has lived there, has many Hausa friends and speaks their language fluently.

The actor revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari wa even one of the first northerners to wish him a happy 75th birthday.

He believes that Nigerians should save Tinubu the rigours of the job of president irrespective of his lifetime ambition.

He then urged Ndigbo to queue behind any candidate of Igbo extraction and ensure he succeeds even when elected.
