News gathered from Vanguard News Online the Independent National Electoral Commission has finally explained why it declared Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress as the victor of the presidential election held on February 25 despite the fact that he received less than 25% of the votes in the federal capital territory.

For this reason, the opposition had approached the election tribunal seeking to have the courts suspend the swearing in of the President-elect on May 29.

The former governor of Lagos state Congress Bola Ahmed Tinubu defeated 17 other candidates including Peter Obi of the Labor Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

In response to the development, INEC stated via its attorney B. Mahmoud stated that the FCT has the status of a state and should be recognized as one of the states of the federation in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.
