World football legend and Argentine-born Diego Maradona is dead.
He died today at the age of 60 following a cardiac arrest.
Argentine President has declared three days of national mourning in his honour.
The world and indeed the sports world have been paying tributes to the man who played an unusual style of football.
According to Lionel Messi,
”Even if I played for a million years, I’d never come close to Diego Maradona. Not that I would want to anyway. He’s the greatest there’s ever been.” – Lionel Messi
Another Football legend, @Pele hopes to some day play football with Maradona in heaven.
Argentine Football Association, in a post on its social media pages expressed its “deepest sorrow for the death of our legend,’ it added that “You will always be in out hearts.”
The Association requested that FIFA retires the number 10 shirt in Maradona’s honour but the request was turned down.
Diego Maradona got addicted to cocaine between the mid 1980s and 2004.
He also struggled with obesity as well as other health issues which caused him surgeries including a gastric bypass, hernia and internal bleeding in the stomach.
He is also reported to have been treated for hepatitis and alcohol abuse and had sessions with psychiatrists.
