The Yoruba  Council of Elders (YCE) has dissociated itself from the endorsement of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi by Afenifere.

The leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Ayo Adebanjo on Monday restated the group’s support for the presidential ambition of the former Governor of Anambra State.

According to Adebanjo, the South West has produced a president and also the current vice president, while the south-south spent six years in the presidency.

He noted that the South-East have never tasted the presidency in Nigeria, adding that now that power has been rotated to the South, it is right for it to go to the Igbo.

He added that Afenifere would not be supporting the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, and the flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

In an interview with Vanguard on Monday, Secretary-General of YCE, Dr Kunle Olajide, said the elders are not aligned to Afenifere supporting Obi.

Olajide disclosed that the elders will meet and make their position known on which presidential candidate to support in 2023.

He said: “We have not been informed or briefed. Yes, we support restructuring and we stand for restructuring but as far as we are concerned, restructuring should be fundamental to any incoming government.

“So, Afenifere is not wrong in taking that decision but we were not informed, my president was not informed. We will make our stand known soon but we are not aligned to Afenifere supporting the presidential candidate of Labour Party.”
