Yoruba indigenes of Kwara State insist they want self determination as they are fed up of being counted as Northern Nigerians.
The citizens of Kwara South Senatorial District submitted their petition to the National Assembly Committee on Review of the Nigerian Constitution.
The group’s national president, Sir Joseph Aderibigbe insists that they were lumped with the Northern Protectorate against their wish and contrary to their right to self determination.
For them, this runs contrary to the United Nations Atlantic Charter.
They demand that they have little in common with the Northern Nigerians and prefer to be merged with Kogi State whose people they share similar culture and tradition with.
In addition, the group wants out because they claim they want freedom and respect that is reciprocal. They would rather join their kith and kin in the rest of the South West.
According to them, “the search for freedom, liberty, independence and self-determination for our people, born and unborn, therefore continues.
“We want a group and region to which we truly belong, where respect between us and others is reciprocal.”
The people also request that the rest of the Yorubas of Kwara State who make up 5 local government areas of the state be merged with the proposed Western Region through a referendum The region should in addition, have its own administrative units.
According to them, their separation from their kith and kin in Ondo, Ekiti and Kwara states is an infringement on their right to self determination and prefer to secede to align properly.
