Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has told Nigerians using Twitter through VPN that they are hurting themselves.
He advised them to stop by passing the suspended route as they expose their sensitive data including their bank accounts.
Mohammed gave the advise when he appeared before lawmakers in an investigative hearing on the government ban on Twitter and its operations in Nigeria.
He used the occasion to call on those with the technical skills to develop Apps similar to Twitter to come forward and make their presentations.
He added that already, applications begun to be come in from “resourceful Nigerians” and hoped that Twitter can be replaced.
According to the Minister, “My advise to anybody using VPN is to stop it, because when you use VPN, it exposes your data including your bank account.”
His advise caused some murmuring among the younger members of the audience.
He continued that “No, no, I’m serious, so please if you think you are using VPN and you think you are hurting Lai Mohammed, you are hurting yourself.
“I think it’s a good opportunity for our very resourceful Nigerians to also look at how they can have an app that can replace Twitter and it will be patronised by all of us.
“We’ve received a few approaches and we want to encourage them.”
